In the Heights centers on a community of characters living in the neighborhood, El Barrio, of Washington Heights, on the northern tip of Manhattan. At the center of the show is Usnavi (played by Christopher Joseph), a bodega owner who looks after the aging Cuban lady next door (Keerthi Sridharan), pines for the gorgeous girl working in the neighboring beauty salon (Emily Leon-Salans), and dreams of escaping to the shores of his native Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Nina (Talia Sulla), a childhood friend of Usnavi’s, has returned to the neighborhood from her first year at college with surprising news for her parents, who have spent their life savings on building a better life for her. Ultimately, Usnavi and the residents of Washington Heights get a dose of what it really means to be home. Other main characters are played by Jordana Meyer, Justin Sherman, Elias Oxman, Ellie Hogan, Vikram Akwei, Maddie Heyman, Jeremy Scheck, and Benjamin “Benjy” Colasito.
In The Heights relies heavily on an accomplished creative team and is Directed by B-CC’s Theatre Director Leayne Dempsey. Leayne was last seen in Olney Theatre’s Little Shop of Horrors. Assistant Directors are Olivia Morales, an MCPS alum, and Tiziano D’Affuso who was last seen in Keegan Theatre’s Dogfight. Our Choreographer is Patricia Targete; she is a class of 1999 B-CC High School alum and is currently performing in a Toby’s Dinner Theatre production of Ragtime. B-CC’s Choral Director Lisa Itkin and Assistant Instrumental Director Matthew Hoffman, of the Grammy Award winning B-CC High School Music Program, lead our student musicians. Matthew Hoffman is the Pit Orchestra Conductor. Technical Direction is provided by Jeffrey Kenton and set design and construction is led by Chris Insley.
